What it is
Yoga combines poses, breathing and relaxation. Community centre classes are usually general classes for mixed levels, with some gentle and some stronger classes.
What to bring
- A yoga mat. Some centres supply mats; bring your own if you can.
- Comfortable clothing that lets you stretch.
- Water and a small towel.
What it costs
Drop-in yoga at a community centre usually costs much less than a private studio class, and fitness memberships often include it. The schedule on each city page shows the price of each session.
Choosing a class
- Gentle or yin: slow, long holds and stretching.
- Hatha: steady poses with rests in between.
- Flow or vinyasa: poses linked with movement; more of a workout.
- Chair yoga: seated poses for limited mobility.
Tips for your first visit
- Arrive a few minutes early to set up your mat.
- Rest in child's pose whenever you need to. Nobody is watching your form.
